prom makeup

jasmine

lots of prom makeup happening this week and next!  jasmine was getting her hair done by melissa c. and makeup done by me at salon L (allenhurst, nj) today.  i put bare escentuals mineral foundation on her with a bit of bronzer on top, NARS blush, and MAC shadows on her eyes. glitter band lashes added length and drama and i finished with a nude lip pencil underneath a neutral lip from benefit.  i’m sure she looked fabulous in her royal blue dress!

making your lipstick last

lipstick-application

you don’t have to buy special “long-lasting” lipsticks if you want your color to last for hours.  here are a few easy steps to keep your lipstick on all day…

  • first, find a nude lipliner (the color of your lips) and outline your lips carefully.  this will prevent feathering.
  • then, fill in your entire lip with the nude lipliner.  go ahead!  color your lips in!
  • now, choose your lipstick color and carefully apply with a lip brush.
  • use a tissue and blot your lipstick down until it has actually stained your lips.
  • reapply your lipstick once again with a lip brush.

the result?  lipstick color that lasts…hooray!

may is skin cancer awareness month

i know that most of us are thrilled that the sun is shining and the weather is warming up…but, we do need to take precautions against harmful UVA and UVB rays.  remember to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen (it should say “broad spectrum” right on the packaging) at all times!  i usually wear SPF 30 on my face and body, but i will put SPF 50 on my nose, shoulders and chest for extra protection.

even in the winter months, i always have SPF 15 on my face.  just don’t count on your makeup that has SPF to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays if it doesn’t specify “broad spectrum.”

three facts about skin cancer that you should know

  • skin cancer and melanoma account for about 50% of all types of cancers diagnosed
  • more than 90% of skin cancer is caused by excessive exposure to the sun
  • each hour, 1 person dies from skin cancer

protect yourself and spread the word!  use sunscreen and keep reapplying.  it’s that simple!

skin deep

this link is to a site called skin deep. it is a cosmetics and personal care safety database. basically, you can type in any brand of makeup, skincare line, etc. and skin deep will give it a safety rating from 1-10. (the lower the number, the safer the product). if they don’t happen to have what you are looking for, you can add a product and they will rate it for you. many thanks to melissa h. for finding this website and sharing with me. if the fda isn’t going to protect us from potentially harmful ingredients in our personal care products, hopefully the environmental working group will! xo
